Viral Post: Learning a new language is never easy, but when there is a strong cultural connection, it can be a beautiful experience. A 19-year-old Bihari boy who is planning to move to Bengaluru for college shared a touching message on Reddit that has received a lot of attention. He’s already fluent in Hindi and English and understands some Bhojpuri and Sanskrit. Yet, he feels a strong bond with all Indian languages, especially Kannada. As he wrote, “I’ve always felt like every Indian language belongs to me just as much as Hindi does.” Now that he’s going to live in Karnataka for over four years, he wants to “connect with Kannada in a real, meaningful way.”

Instead of just quick lessons, he wants to “absorb the language slowly and respectfully, like it’s my own.” He’s also eager to dive into classical Kannada literature, sharing his interest in reading religious and philosophical works from Madhvacharya’s tradition, the songs of Purandara Dasa, and classic Kannada novels. But he honestly admits, “I don’t know a single word of Kannada yet.”

His direct and polite manner has served as an inspiration to many, especially in these times when words have the capacity to cause division. He doesn’t just want to speak Kannada; he wants to live it.

The post, after being shared on Reddit two days ago, received many comments from Reddit users. "Learn a few everyday words and phrases as time goes by. By the time you’re out of college, you’ll have some knowledge without dedicated learning. After that, if you’re job keeps you here, then think about learning properly. Many companies provide classes in-house as well(that’s how I learned to speak). My mother tongue is not Hindi," a user wrote.

"Focus on College and just be aware of local customs and surroundings.
Be humble and treat ppl with respect, and the same shall be reciprocated. With that being said, learning some basic Kannada, over a period of time, might be good for you, as it will keep u aware of every situation," a second user added. "By speaking to people. If you don’t understand something, ask people, and that’s the best way. People go out of their way to welcome you and encourage you learning Kannada," added another user.
