Viral Video: For a country where no temple is complete without a beautiful idol of a strong Goddess, India sure has become one of the most unsafe places for women in recent years. From increasing rape cases, and brandishing of the dowry system to domestic abuse, hassarment, and whatnot, some of the most concerning headlines, unfortunately, flashed on front pages in past years. Adding to the list, another troublesome incident surfaced online, where a woman’s late-night train travel in Chennai turned into a nightmare.
Taking to the internet, the woman journalist shared a video of her experience, where several men were caught staring at her. One of the men was even seen doing lewd gestures and touching himself inappropriately, as he continued to record the journalist in return.
The video went viral and left people questioning the safety and security of women in India. Meanwhile, the rest found the incident ‘threatening’ and were left irked and disgusted at the same time.
The video was shared on the social media platform Instagram, by the handle ‘hauterrfly’. The post was captioned, “Reason why women don’t feel safe in India. Watch 2 AM Stories.”

The video, after surfacing online, went viral and left the internet in disgust. Most people sympathised with the woman for having to witness such ‘mental harassment’, while some others chastised the men for behaving in such a manner. Some also pointed out the gruesome reality of India and many of its parts where women's safety is nothing but a ‘joke’. The post was shared two days ago and pulled 296K likes from people.

Taking to the comment section, people shared their take. “My anxiety shot up just watching this video,” a user said. “God this is so scary. I felt unsafe just by watching this through my screen,” said a second person. “And some men cry- ladies ke liye alag dabba kyu? How’s this equality?” asked a third person. “We live in such a sick society. Just as a 10-year-old without even knowing what these gestures mean I’ve experienced the worst. This video got me anxious,” said a fourth netizen.
“It is utterly disturbing to see the so-called educated clowns talking about South vs North, while the real issue here is the safety of a woman that's questionable. Sorry you had to go through this and this terrifies me as a woman who comes home late from work,” wrote a sixth user.
“India is not safe be it south or north. Maybe Chennai is better than northern places but no it isn't safe. I cannot speak for other cities in the south! Staring, groping, flashing, stalking, and touching oneself happen everywhere across India. You are lucky if you haven't encountered one!” wrote a seventh.
