The decision came during a key meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, which India is hosting at Delhi’s historic Red Fort. Deepavali, also called Diwali, is celebrated by millions as a festival of lights, symbolising the victory of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance.

Officials Welcome The Recognition:
Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat highlighted the significance of the recognition, saying it acknowledges a tradition that holds deep emotional value for Indians. “This UNESCO tag is also a responsibility; we must ensure Deepavali remains a living heritage,” he told PTI, reminding everyone that the festival is not just a celebration, but a part of India’s living culture.
