For the last few days, all the internet can talk about is the popular food delivery app Zomato. No, it's not because of their excellent service or some other issue-related instance going viral, but rather because of the brand’s CEO, Deepinder Goyal. The CEO found himself in the middle of a unique drama after he shared a social media post about needing a Chief Of Staff for the company. The skills required for the position looked rather ‘humble’- like hunger, empathy, common sense and more. However, the point that changed the way the internet perceived the otherwise great offer was how it was asking the candidate to pay Rs 20 lakh. The offer sounded more like an internship, which would have given great results after a year- as per Goyal.
All in all, the post was quick to divide people as some believed it was a bad pitch, while the rest called it a trick to get better candidates. Amid all the chaos, a former Zomato engineer came forward to defeat the CEO, as he recalled his own experience of 1 year and called it beneficial for the longer run. However, the advocacy failed to work as the majority of the internet refused to agree with the ex-Zomato employee.
Goyal, on the other hand, clarified recently that the Rs 20 lakh part was indeed a ‘filter’. Meanwhile, he further claimed that the brand received over 10,000 applications.
The post was shared on X (formerly Twitter), by the handle ‘championswimmer’. The post was captioned, “I know people are commenting various stupid things about ‘paid internship’ Leaving this note here as someone who got the chance to work 1 year with @deepigoyal, if you're looking for a career in Management Consulting / Strategy, this is worth waaaay more than ₹20L!” The post was shared two days ago and pulled 274K views from people.

Leaving this note here as someone who got the chance to work 1 year with @deepigoyal, if you're looking for a career in Management Consulting / Strategy, this is worth waaaay more than ₹20L!
Taking to the comment section, people shared their take. “No, it’s not. What if the person pays 20L and, later after one year the founder decides he is not the right fit? What about that 20L? Yeah, I get it charity, this and that. But the person joining won’t be some highly experienced individual, they’ll likely be fresh graduates just starting their careers. Freshers and young professionals need money, not fame,” a user said.
“There is no value in ‘Consulting’, all consulting firms are generally mediocre,” added a second user. “This is a publicly advertised paid post so zero prestige - and as a fresher, it’s very unlikely you’ll be given any responsibilities worth the title. So frankly this is pretty worthless on a CV - the only thing it says about you is that you have 20L to burn,” added another.
“You worked with him for 1 year but you didn't pay 20 lakh and you were also getting salary. This job is unpaid internship + pay for internship. Either of these is still acceptable but both shouldn't,” added another person.
