Iran Hijab Row: Just two years back- in 2022- the world, especially women, wept over the violation of basic freedom as Iranian Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini passed away on September 16, after spending days in detention over her ‘improper’ clothing in Iran. The woman was arrested by Gasht-e Ershad, Iran’s ‘morality police’ in Tehran, followed by reports of Amini getting brutally beaten up during resistance. The brutality of the incident surely compelled many Iranians to take to streets as they protested against authorities, only to either get arrested or reportedly killed. This unfolded in 2022, and since then, only time advanced- the society surely did not- as another incident sparked major controversy over an ‘improper’ hijab just recently in November 2024. A video of an Iranian student stripping down to her underwear in protest against Iran’s strict Islamic dress code was shared online, which went viral and left people reacting.
The incident was reportedly triggered after the said student was ‘assaulted’ over an ‘improper hijab’ by the Morality Police. In a show of ‘resilience’ as per many, the woman ended up stripping down in public. A video of her roaming in her undergarments at the Islamic Azad University was shared online, which garnered major support as many dubbed her ‘brave’ and ‘courageous’ for the move. Reportedly, the girl was later arrested, but her current condition is still not clear.
As soon as the video of the girl began to do rounds on social media, people were quick to share their take. From sketches to cartoons, strong support was displayed for the woman on the internet. Many also pointed out the urgent need for intervention in the case, keeping in mind the girl’s unclear whereabouts, while the rest simply hailed her for her unique protest.
“Tehran University student was accused of wearing her hijab improperly and had her clothes damaged by the ‘vice police’. In response, she took off her clothes in protest. During her arrest, her head was slammed against a door, causing bleeding,” a user said.

“The revolutionary woman took off her clothes to protest against the atrocities being committed against women for wearing hijab. A woman should be free to choose what she wears,” added a second person.

“In Iran, a woman who was accosted by the “morality police” for not wearing hijab removes her clothing & roams the streets in defiance. She has since been arrested by IRGC forces and forcibly disappeared. This is the brave face of true resistance,” added a third person.
