Throning: A new dating trend called throning is going viral on social media and has taken everyone by surprise. After years of coming across different terms such as “ghosting," “breadcrumbing," and “situationships" throning has arrived and has taken the dating culture by storm. What does the term throning mean?
According to the New York Post, 'throning' means "dating someone who boosts your reputation (and, probably, ego) just by association". This dating trend is more about aligning with someone whose social status might elevate their own visibility. It is basically putting your date or partner on a metaphorical throne for their social perks; however, the character is not valued.
Dating is more about love, but throning is more for status, fame, or power rather than genuine affection in a relationship. If a person thrones, the implication is that the partner is being placed on a pedestal—either socially or financially, and the main motive beside it is self-elevation.
According to a News18 report, a study in Science Advances reveals that many dating app users seek partners who are 25% more desirable than themselves, subtly suggesting the desire to elevate one’s status by associating with someone perceived as being of higher standing.
The new trend throning might seem exciting as it gives an individual the illusion of love; however, it rarely goes beyond that. It might begin well, but such relationships are more often emotionally hollow, as that was never a criteria for the people going together. The individuals might use each other without valuing them truly.
Stacy Thomson, founder of matchmaking dating app Reddi, told Indy100 the reason behind "Throning" ultimately failing to provide "real fulfilment" within relationships.
"It's very important for people engaging in this trend to take a step back and think about their reasons for doing so and how it will affect them and their partner in the long run. Ultimately, real fulfilment in relationships tends to come from authenticity and mutual respect," she added.

"While it may give temporary confidence or entry into a particular circle, a relationship based primarily on social status often lacks both the depths and stability that come from shared values and emotional intimacy," she explained.
