US Woman Viral Post: At just 19 years old, Eliza Karaza left her home in Chicago and flew to Mumbai with no clear plan; she didn’t know her salary, where she’d stay, or even which school she’d be working at. “I hadn’t spoken to the employer. I didn’t know where either was staying when I got there,” she said. Still, she took the leap with excitement. “But who cares?! I was 19 and excited!” Eliza, a Syrian-American, came to India in 2015 for a job as an art teacher. She had never been to the country before, never worked full-time, and had no idea what to expect. But her bold decision turned into a life-changing journey.

In a heartfelt Instagram post nearly ten years later, she called Mumbai her greatest teacher; more than just a city, it became her second home. “I didn’t know what my salary would be. I didn’t know which school I’d be teaching at. I hadn’t even spoken to my employer,” she wrote in her post. Despite all the unknowns, she embraced the adventure with open arms.

Over the years, Eliza made a name for herself in Mumbai. In 2020, she started her fashion label Harakaat, which blends South Asian art with hand-painted denim jackets. Later, she co-founded Mehal House, a creative studio and lifestyle brand. From being a lost teenager with no idea where she'd sleep, to becoming a successful entrepreneur, Eliza’s story is a powerful reminder of what courage and belief can lead to. “I love Bombay so much,” she wrote. “I loved how easy it was to get around. I felt so free.”
