JE News Desk:  The price of tomatoes is hitting headlines ever since the monsoon arrived in India. Heavy rain has affected the farming of tomatoes leading to an extremely high jump in the selling prices of the vegetable. According to the latest update, in Uttrakhand, the price of tomato crossed Rs 200 per kg mark. Meanwhile, the burger outlet, McDonald's issued a notice saying that they are facing problems in the supply of the kitchen staple.

"We are ever committed to serve you the best food with the best of ingredients. Despite our best efforts, we are not able to get adequate quantities of tomatoes which pass our world class stringer quality checks. Hence for the time being we are forced to serve you products without tomatoes," it said.

"Rest assured; we are working to get the tomatoes supplies back. We value your patronage and regret the inconvience caused," it added.

Since being shared, the post has amassed over 50k views. "That's a tomato Supremacy, Itna toh Onion k time Pe Bhi Nhi Kiya tha," a user commented.

Defending the burger outlet's step another user said, "Jokes apart, this is standard for McDonald's to not serve tomatoes during the rainy season since tomatoes quality is not upto the mark."

"Wow! Never seen this before," stated another person.

Meanwhile, many attributed the sharp rise in vegetable prices to the prevailing heatwave in key tomato-growing areas, as well as heavy rains, leading to a disruption in supply chains.

Tomatoes also have a relatively lower shelf life, which is also believed to be having a bearing on their prices.

Faced with a price pinch, the Tamil Nadu government has started selling tomatoes at a subsidized rate of Rs 60 per kg at ration shops in state capital Chennai in a bid to bring some respite to the consumers amid the price spiral.

In Chennai, tomatoes are currently selling at Rs 100-130 per kg.
