Viral Video: A degree from Cambridge University is often seen as a stepping stone to success, but Dr. Marika Niihori’s experience challenges that notion. Despite earning a PhD in Physics from one of the world’s most renowned institutions, she found herself struggling to secure a job, facing rejection after rejection.

When Niihori completed her doctorate in October last year, she was optimistic about her future, believing that finding a high-paying role would be a smooth process. However, reality proved otherwise. Living in London, she sent out countless job applications, only to be met with over 70 rejections. The constant setbacks not only delayed her career plans but also took a toll on her mental health, making her feel disconnected from peers who seemed to be progressing effortlessly.

She took to Instagram to share her journey, openly discussing the emotional strain of job hunting. Reflecting on her loneliness, she wrote, “I’m constantly battling that feeling of loneliness, even in a city like London, where everyone seems to be on their own path.” The uncertainty of her career path made her question her choices, something she never expected after earning such a prestigious degree.

Despite the difficulties, Niihori recognised the privilege of being able to take a step back and reassess her goals. She admitted, “I didn’t expect to take a ‘career break.’ I thought completing a PhD would bring clarity to my future. But having the flexibility and privilege to take some time off has been a blessing in disguise.” This time allowed her to reflect on what she truly wanted, rather than rushing into a job for the sake of stability.

After months of effort, she finally received the long-awaited news—she had secured a position at a biotech startup. Excited to share this milestone, she posted, “Never thought this day would come. Thank you for following along with my job search era!! We’ve now officially entered. Biotech startup. girlie era!”
