The minute India’s one of the biggest global stars, Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh, announced his upcoming concert in India, the desi music lovers went crazy for all the obvious reasons. Amid that, the news of British band Coldplay also coming to India for a concert after a good long nine years, only became an added bonus that people fell in love with. However, one’s mere love for these musical legends was not enough to get the tickets for their concerts, which was brutally reminded to people after tickets began to get sold out in seconds- only to be resold at a much higher price. Some determined fans went ahead and bought the more expensive tickets, while the rest were left sulking and sharing their ‘grief’ of not being able to attend the concert.

Needless to say, these tickets are what people are talking about these days in India. Adding his own 2 cents on the matter, popular author Chetan Bhagat also commented on it and highlighted India’s ‘income disparity’ and compared it with people spending thousands for Coldplay concert tickets.

As soon as the post went viral, BharatPe co-founder Ashneer Grover chimed in and countered the issue by highlighting the nation’s increasing tendency to spend on a better lifestyle. The post went viral and also pulled reactions from others.

The post was shared on the writer’s X (formerly Twitter) handle. It read, “On one hand we get figures of Indian salary percentiles and on the other, there’s near mania for concert tickets. Who’s paying so much and buying all these tickets? What percentage of your monthly salary are people spending on these tickets? Some YOLO logic here? What?”

Responding to his post, Ashneer Grover’s post read, “It’s a large country - and a lot is disparity on either end - why is filling of 80k stadium surprising anyone ? 800k students go overseas every year - spending $50K on an average. Also now that most people who can afford have phones - things will fill up instantly as well.”

Taking to the comment section, people shared their sides. “Your argument is flawed here! — education and smartphones can be investments when used wisely. Attending a Coldplay concert? That’s just chasing a fleeting dopamine hit. Artificial beats, flashy lights, and no real substance—what are we really getting out of it? It's all for the show. Time to ask: are we investing in personal growth or just showing off for a quick thrill?” a user said.

“There are two Indias: one queues up for Coldplay tickets, while the other queues up for 5kg of ration,” added a second person. “Many entrepreneurs observe opportunities for building businesses. If you look at what every individual does want and you add some value that really makes you rich,” added a third person. “Ticket price is only 2500 ..lots of people can afford this,” wrote another.
