Food delivery apps have become an easy and accessible source of killing your hunger without entering your kitchen. However, several social media posts related to whopping bills charged by these food delivery apps often shock the netizens. A restaurant bill with exorbitant charges for the purchase of a Gujarati dish Thepla is going viral on the internet.

Taking to her X (formerly Twitter) handle, a woman shared a picture of the Zomato bill that she received after ordering some Theplas through the app. The woman pointed out that she has been additionally charged Rs 60 for the food container only. She then asked the delivery app to explain the container charges that were equal to the food she ordered, as a single Thepla was priced at Rs 60.

The picture of the bill was shared by Khushboo Thakkar. The post was captioned, “Container charge is equivalent to the item that I have ordered ₹60 for the container charge Seriously??”

The total amount paid for the order was Rs 249, while the container charge was Rs 60.

Soon after the X post went viral, Zomato took to the comment section and clarified that the container charge is implemented by the restaurant and is added to their earnings. The comment by Zomato read, "Hi Khushboo, while taxes are universal and vary from 5 - 18% depending on the type of food. Packaging charges are levied by our restaurant partners, they are the ones who implement and earn from this practice. For further clarification please feel free to initiate a private (1/2)."

The incident took place on August 2 and has pulled 43.4K views so far from netizens. Taking to the comment section, the people shared their views.

"Earlier I use to order from swiggy and Zomato.. now I take out my SUV, drive, pay parking, pay tip and still it's cheaper than Zomato.. plus it increases social interaction... Zomato usually mess up the order and then we need to beg to customer care for my own money," a user said. "If you have iPhone then it doesn't matter of container price 60rs," added a second. "Additional charges makes us irritable," joined a third user. "More peculiar is.... It says 'Prices are inclusive of GST' and then charges the GST!" said a fourth.
