Ratan Naval Tata was born on December 28, 1937, in Mumbai to Naval Tata and Sooni Tata. He was also the great-grandson of Jamsetji Tata, the founder of the Tata Group.
The business tycoon was raised by his grandmother, Navajbai Tata, after his parents separated in 1948.
The industrialist never married, though he had fallen in love four times and came close to marriage, but it never quite worked out.
Ratan Tata began his career in 1961 on the shop floor of Tata Steel, laying the groundwork for his future leadership roles.
During India's economic liberalisation, Ratan Tata restructured the Tata Group and led the launch of Tata Nano and Tata Indica cars.
Ratan Tata was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2008 by the President of India, Pratibha Patil.
After he retired, Ratan Tata was given the title of Chairman Emeritus for Tata Sons, Tata Industries, Tata Motors, Tata Steel, and Tata Chemicals.
