Vat Savitri fast is a day-long fast observed by women in various parts of India to seek a long and healthy life for their husbands. It is done in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, etc.
The Vat Savitri fast commemorates the pious act of Savitri, who rescued her husband, Satyavan, from Yamraj, the god of death. She prayed for her husband’s long life.
Married woman prepares ‘bhog’ or offering, performs the Vat Savitri pooja, ties a kaccha soot (sacred thread) around the banyan tree and prays for their husband’s life.
The banyan tree holds an important place in Vat Savitri pooja, as Savitri sat under the Banyan tree. Three Hindu deities: Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh are said to reside in the tree.
Vat Savitri is observed on the Full Moon Day of the Jyeshtha month. It will be celebrated on May 25th, 2025. Married women will dress like newlyweds and perform the pooja.
Though the fast is mainly observed by married women, unmarried women can ado the Vat Savitri fast. They can seek blessings and pray for an ideal husband.
