DO AND DON’TS DURING A HEATWAVE

Sweating in the scorching April heat? Summers are here and it's time to prepare yourself for the rising temperatures. Tap to know the dos and don’ts of during a heatwave.

WEAR LIGHTWEIGHT CLOTHES

Take out all your comfy cotton clothes from your closet. Cotton clothes are lightweight and gentle on the body. Wear them to avoid heat rashes.

WEAR BROAD-SPECTRUM SUNSCREEN

A broad-spectrum sunscreen is a must during heatwave. Apply it 15-20 minutes before going out in the sun and reapply after 2-3 hours.

HYDRATE YOURSELF

Carry a water bottle wherever you go to prevent yourself from dehydration. You can also opt for hydrating and soothing drinks, like buttermilk or lemon water.

TAKE FREQUENT COOL SHOWERS

Cold water showers can be relaxing and soothing. Take a cold water shower frequently during a heatwave. You can also carry a damp cloth.

AVOID GOING OUT DURING PEAK HOURS

If not necessary, avoid going out during peak hours of the day, between 12 PM to 3 PM. Reschedule the task before or after to protect from heatwave.

AVOID CARBONATED DRINKS

As per the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMC), you should avoid dehydrating drinks, like alcohol, tea or coffee.

AVOID STALE FOOD

It is important to maintain a healthy diet during a heatwave to protect yourself. Avoid high-protein food and stale food.

AVOID LEAVING CHILDREN OUTSIDE

Avoid leaving your children or pets in parked vehicles. If they stay there for hours, their body may absorb more heat than usual.

WHAT TO DO IF A PERSON GETS HEATSTROKE?

If a person suffers from heatstroke, try to cool down the body’s temperature by wiping them with damp clothes. Give them a hydrating drink and take them to the nearest hospital.
