As per the Times of India, if the litchis have a mix of tones, like red, green or pink, it is likely to be a real one. On the other hand, if it is overly red or has an even tone, it is artificially coloured.
To distinguish between real and fake litchis, you can perform a texture test. If the litchis have a coarse texture with bumps, it is real. If it has a smooth and sipperty texture, it is fake.
Take a bowl of water and add a few litchis to it. The real litchis would sink or float in the water without changing its colour, while the fake litchis would change the colour of water.
Fake litchis have a pungent, chemical-like smell unlike the real ones. The real ones have a sweet, fruity and mild smell. The chemical-like smell is due to exposure of harmful chemicals.
In India, litchis often grow in summer months, particularly between May to July. If you are buying it off-season, you must be purchasing the artificial ones.
