You must have noticed various lipsticks labelled as ‘cruelty-free’, but you will be surprised after checking the list of ingredients. If the lipstick has some non-vegetarian ingredients, it is non-vegan.
Though there are vegan lipstick options also present in the market, most of them contain non-vegan ingredients. The list of non-vegan ingredients are in the next slides.
If you love wearing red pigmented lipstick, be careful, as it may contain carmine, a non-vegan ingredient. It is extracted from the shells of female cochineal insect (bettles).
According to Vegan Food & Living, Squalane is obtained from sharks’ liver, and it is used in lip balms and moisturisers. Though there are vegan squalane available in the market.
Beeswax or honey is derived from the abdominal glands of worker honeybees. It is used as a thickening agent in water-based products and waterproofing agent in moisturisers.
Some of the other animal-derived ingredients are: casein, glycerine, hyaluronic acid, retinol and stearic acid. It is sometimes animal-derived and mostly vegan.
