The Karnataka government is considering significant reforms to labour laws that could extend the maximum workday to 12 hours. Tap to check the reaction of Karnataka State IT/ITeS Employees Union!
The plan is supposedly to extend the workday and make it up to 12 hours a day. After this, the trade unions and employees voiced serious concerns about its implications.
Trade unions have opposed the proposal, labelling it as ‘modern-day slavery.’ They assert that such changes prioritise corporate profits over the well-being of employees.
If implemented, the amendment could severely disrupt work-life balance and compromise job security. Workers may be subjected to heightened levels of stress and potential burnout.
According to the ‘State Emotional Wellbeing Report 2024,’ a staggering 90% of corporate employees under the age of 25 report experiencing anxiety. Extended work hours could further exacerbate these mental health challenges.
The proposed changes could result in a shift toward a two-shift system, potentially reducing the workforce by one-third.
