International Labour Day, often referred to as May Day, is celebrated on May 1 ( First Day of May) to honour the worker’s rights and contributions worldwide.
In 1886, the Americans started a nationwide strike demanding an eight-hour workday. It turned into a violent strike, deaths of seven police officers and four civilians. Then, the socialist parties declared May 1 as Labour Day.
Every year, Labour Day is celebrated with a different theme. This year, International Labour Day 2025, is being celebrated with the theme ‘Safety and Health of Workers’.
Out of 195 countries in the world, a total of 165 countries celebrate Workers Day on May 1 and observe it as a holiday. The other countries celebrate it on different days.
May 1 is celebrated as Workers Day in different nations of Asia, Africa, Europe and America. A few of those nations are: France, Germany, South Africa, India, Russia, Brazil and Vietnam.
Due to political and cultural differences, it is celebrated on different days. In the UN and Ireland, it is celebrated on the first day of September, and in New Zealand, it is celebrated on the fourth Monday of October.
Workers' Day is celebrated worldwide to honour the contributions and achievements of workers. The celebration includes: holiday, parades, union gatherings and celebrations.
