AI delivery vehicles UAE: In a move that points towards the future of transport and logistics, Abu Dhabi has implemented its inaugural pilot scheme for autonomous delivery vehicles powered by AI. The move is part of the emirate's long-term vision to make smart mobility solutions, ease congestion, and meet sustainability objectives.
The Smart and Autonomous Systems Council on Monday issued Abu Dhabi its very first official license plate to a self-driving delivery vehicle. It has started a pilot in Masdar City, a hub famous for sustainable urban development and clean technology. The pilot will extend gradually to broader commercial service across the capital in the next few years.
The self-driving vehicles were designed by Autogo, a unit of Abu Dhabi-based technology company K2, and will run in collaboration with 7X's logistics subsidiary, EMX. The partnership is also supported by the Abu Dhabi Investment Office.
How The Vehicles Work
The vehicles are equipped with artificial intelligence, smart navigation systems, and advanced sensors that allow them to move safely alongside regular traffic. They are designed for last-mile delivery services, operating without human drivers and optimised for efficiency and safety.
Key features of Abu Dhabi’s autonomous delivery vehicles include:
• AI-driven navigation and obstacle detection
• Smart mobility systems for urban deliveries
• Emission-reducing design to support green economy targets
• Licence plate recognition and adherence to transport legislation
• Real-time monitoring and control through combined logistics systems
Strategic Goals And Sustainability
The introduction is not just a pilot but as part of a full-scale smart transport strategy. Abu Dhabi has set a goal to have 25 per cent of all travel in the emirate be smart and sustainable by 2040. Dr. Abdulla Hamad Al Ghfeli, Acting Director General, Abu Dhabi Mobility, stated, “This project is not just a technical trial but part of a comprehensive strategy to strengthen smart logistics, leverage advanced technologies to reduce emissions and congestion, and improve quality of life in our cities.”
Tariq Al Wahedi, 7X Group CEO, further stated that his business is dedicated to an accelerated, safer, and more sustainable delivery model that is in line with the UAE's green economy and digital transformation vision.
The pilot adds to several other futuristic initiatives in Abu Dhabi transport. In July, the emirate tested a self-driving shuttle service on a 2.4 km route in Masdar City, while driverless taxis are already in service elsewhere. Abu Dhabi has also tested flying taxis and drone deliveries, which puts it in the world's top ranks for autonomous transport. The new delivery service is a "pivotal milestone" that will revolutionize logistics and establish a standard for future mobility in the Gulf.
