Afghanistan Earthquake: Powerful earthquakes that hit western Afghanistan have killed more than 2,000 people and injured more than 9,000, the Taliban administration said on Sunday. Mullah Janan Sayeeq, a spokesman for the Ministry of Disasters, told Reuters that 2,053 people were dead, 9,240 injured and 1,329 houses damaged or destroyed.

Herat Earthquake: Here Are Top Points

- An earthquake of magnitude 6.3 hit the western Afghanistan, Herat, on Saturday.

- At least five powerful earthquakes struck the city around noon, Herat city resident Abdul Shakor Samadi said, as quoted by news agency Associated Press (AP).

- According to the United States Geological Survey, the epicentre was located 40 kilometres (25 miles) to the northwest of Herat, the major city in the area. Eight aftershocks, with magnitudes ranging from 4.3 to 6.3, were felt after the initial quake.

- A map posted on the USGS website indicated seven earthquakes in the region, including a magnitude 5.9 earthquake 35 kilometres (21.7 miles) north-northwest of Herat, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake 33 kilometres (20.5 miles) north-northeast of Zindah Jan and another 6.3 magnitude earthquake 29 kilometres (18 miles) north-northeast Zindah Jan, which is about 43 kilometres (26 miles) west of Herat city, AP reported.

- According to officials, twelve villages in the Zinda Jan and Ghoryan districts have been completely destroyed.

- In a video, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Disaster Management, claimed that some homes in the provinces of Farah and Badghis had also been partially demolished.

- According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), six earthquakes occurred in western Afghanistan the largest one was at a magnitude of 6.3.

Is Afghanistan Prone To Earthquake

Afghanistan is prone to earthquakes, particularly in the Hindu Kush mountain range, situated near the convergence of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates. A powerful earthquake struck the mountainous region of eastern Afghanistan in June 2022 killing over 1000 people and injuring approximately 1500, reported Pajhwok Afghan News.
