An Air India plane bound for London with 242 people on board crashed minutes after taking off from India's Ahmedabad city on Thursday, the airline said. However, details on casulities is awaited. The plane was headed to Gatwick airport in the UK, Air India said, while police officers said it crashed in a civilian area near the airport. The 242 people included 217 adults and 11 children, news agency Reuters reported citing its sources. Of them, 169 were Indian nationals, 53 were Britons, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian, the airline confirmed in a social media post. Aviation tracking site Flightradar24 said the plane was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, one of the most modern passenger aircraft in service.

UK working with local authorities to establish facts around Air India plane crash

Britain is working with Indian authorities to urgently establish the facts around the Air India plane crash and to provide support to those involved, the country's foreign office said in a statement posted on its website on Thursday. "We are aware of a plane crash in Ahmedabad. The UK is working with local authorities in India to urgently establish the facts and provide support to those involved. British nationals who require consular assistance or have concerns about friends or family should call 020 7008 5000," read a statement released on UK Foreign Ministry website.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday said that the scenes emerging of a London-bound Air India plane carrying many British nationals crashing in Ahmedabad are "devastating". "I am being kept updated as the situation develops, and my thoughts are with the passengers and their families at this deeply distressing time," he said.

Buckingham Palace said King Charles III is being kept informed and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy took to social media to express his support. “Deeply saddened by news of a devastating plane crash in Ahmedabad, India. My thoughts are with all those affected. The UK is working with local authorities in India to urgently establish the facts and provide support,” he said.
Lammy said the UK Foreign Office has arranged crisis teams in both Delhi and London.
