Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan’s sister, Aleema Khan, has launched a blistering attack on Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir, accusing him of being a “radicalised Islamist” who seeks conflict with India. Speaking on The World with Yalda Hakim on Sky News, Aleema alleged that Munir’s “Islamic conservatism” drives him to pursue war rather than peace.

Her remarks come just as Munir is set to become Pakistan’s first Chief of Defence Forces (CDF). The comments also follow her sister’s permission to meet Imran Khan inside Adiala Jail amid growing rumours about the former prime minister’s safety.

‘Munir’s Radicalisation Pushes Him Toward War’

During the interview, Aleema claimed that the India-Pakistan conflict was fuelled not by political disputes alone but by Munir’s ideological worldview.

“Asim Munir is a radicalised Islamist, an Islamic conservative. This is why he yearns for a war with India. His radicalisation forces him to fight those who don’t believe in Islam,” she said. She contrasted Munir’s alleged hardline stance with her brother’s approach.

“Imran Khan is a pure liberal. Whenever Imran comes to power, he tries to be friends with India, even the BJP. But when a radical Islamist like Munir is in charge, there will be war with India and even India’s allies will suffer.”

Aleema urged Western nations to step up efforts to secure Imran Khan’s release, calling him an “asset” whose leadership is necessary to stabilise the region.

Tensions After India’s Precision Strikes

Her comments resurfaced just weeks after India carried out precision strikes on nine terror bases across Pakistan on May 7. The strikes, part of Operation Sindoor, were launched in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians. India clarified that the operation targeted terror infrastructure, not Pakistan’s military or civilians.

General Munir has long had a strained relationship with Imran Khan. In 2019, as ISI chief, he reportedly sought to investigate corruption allegations involving Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi. Khan removed him from the post after only eight months, far short of the usual three-year term. Many believe this episode cemented Munir’s hostility toward the former prime minister.

Imran Khan’s Jail Ordeal And Family’s Fears

Imran Khan has been imprisoned since August 2023 following multiple convictions. For weeks, his family has raised alarms about his isolation in Adiala Jail, claiming they were barred from meeting him.

On Tuesday, sister Dr Uzma Khanum met him for 20 minutes and later told reporters he was being “mentally tortured”. “He is locked in his cell all day and cannot communicate with anyone,” she said, adding that Imran directly blamed General Asim Munir for his imprisonment and deteriorating condition.
