Bangladesh earthquake news: At least six people were killed and 50 others injured after a 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck Bangladesh on Friday morning, sending shockwaves across densely populated regions, including the capital Dhaka.
Authorities said the tremor, which originated near Narsingdi, roughly 40 km east of Dhaka, caused damage to several structures and triggered widespread panic.
Epicentre Near Narsingdi; Dhaka Residents Rush Outdoors
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake struck around mid-morning, prompting thousands of residents in Dhaka to run out of their homes and offices as buildings swayed for several seconds. Makeshift structures and railings in older buildings were the most affected, police officials said.
Three people lost their lives when the railing of a six-storey building collapsed as the ground shook. “We felt a sudden, strong jolt, and the building was shaking like trees in a storm. Children were crying, nobody knew what was happening,” Dhaka resident Suman Rahman said to Reuters while recalling the moment staircases became packed with people trying to escape. In several under-construction buildings, loose cement chunks and bricks fell, leading to additional injuries, the fire department reported.
Interim government chief Muhammad Yunus appealed to citizens to remain calm and avoid rumours as teams began assessing damage across affected districts. “Further guidance will be issued through official channels and emergency hotlines if required. Our focus is on ensuring the safety of all citizens,” he said in a statement.
Impact Felt Across Eastern India
The impact of the quake was felt across the border in eastern India, particularly in West Bengal. Tremors rattled several districts in both North and South Bengal. In Kolkata, residents felt the ground shaking around 10:10 a.m. local time as many living in high-rise apartments rushed outdoors.
Areas that received considerable jolts included Nadia, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Murshidabad, Cooch Behar, and North Dinajpur. In Kolkata, hospital medical staff and patients ran out of the buildings, fearing structural damage, though later authorities said no casualties or loss of property occurred in the state.

The administration of West Bengal called upon people not to panic but stay alert, assuring that disaster management teams are monitoring the situation. However, many locals were in fear of potential aftershocks and came out on the roads.
