Bangladesh Results: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) got a landslide victory in the national elections of Bangladesh by winning 209 out of the total 299 seats. Tarique Rahman, BNP's chairman, won two seats- Dhaka 17 and Bogra-6 and is set to become the next prime minister of the country. Apart from this, the Jamaat-e-Islami party could not have a big impact, as it managed to win only 76 seats. The election was conducted months after the ouster of the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina following a massive student protest.
Rise Of Tarique Rahman
Tarique Rahman, son of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Khalida Zia, has made a solid comeback after being exiled for nearly 17 years. Earlier in December, Rahman returned to Dhaka from London to contest the polls following the ouster of Hasina. Bangladesh is currently being run by an interim government led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus. While describing the victory as historic, BNP leaders reiterated the party will ask India to send Hasina to face a trial.
"We have consistently pressed for her extradition in accordance with the law. This is an issue between the foreign ministries of the two countries. We have urged the government of India to send her back to face trial in Bangladesh," senior party leader Salahuddin Ahmed was quoted as saying by PTI.
The voters of Bangladesh also voted for the implementation of the July National Charter, which lays down reforms for good governance, democracy, and social justice through institutional reforms, reported Reuters.
What's Next For Sheikh Hasina?
Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina described the recently conducted polls as unconstitutional and a farce. "Today’s so-called election by Yunus, who seized power illegally and unconstitutionally, was essentially a well-planned farce," Bangladesh Awami League stated in a post on X. The BNP is likely to strongly demand extradition of Hasina in its early communication with New Delhi.
