In a gruesome incident that has shaken Bangladesh, a 39-year-old scrap trader named Lal Chand Sohag was brutally lynched to death with cement slabs in broad daylight outside Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka on July 9. The horrifying attack was recorded on video and widely circulated on social media, sparking national outrage and leading to student protests across the country.
According to police and local media reports, Lal Chand was lured to the hospital premises by a group of extortionists, where he was beaten with stones, bricks, and slabs of concrete. He was reportedly stripped, stomped on, and struck repeatedly on the head and body until he lay motionless. In one of the most shocking elements of the attack, the assailants were seen dancing over his lifeless body after confirming his death.
The attack took place in front of Sir Salimullah Medical College (Mitford Hospital), a busy area in Dhaka, and has raised serious concerns about public safety and the rising boldness of criminal groups.

Arrests And Political Fallout
Following the incident, a case was filed at Kotwali Police Station by the victim’s sister, Manjuara Begum, naming 19 individuals and 15–20 unidentified attackers. So far, seven people have been arrested, including individuals affiliated with opposition youth, student, and volunteer wings. In response, five members of these groups have been expelled from their respective organisations.
Bangladesh’s Home Affairs Adviser, Lt. Gen. (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, confirmed the arrests and promised swift justice. “No matter who the perpetrator is, no one will be spared on the grounds of political identity. The law is equal for all,” he said. Authorities are also investigating whether there was any negligence on the part of law enforcement in handling the case.
Preparations are now underway to bring the case under a speedy trial tribunal, and a nationwide combing operation was launched on Sunday to apprehend all suspects and maintain pre-election law and order.
Students Demand Justice
In response to the brutal killing, students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) organized a torch rally and protest on campus, demanding justice and decrying the continued rise in violent crime. They criticised the government's failure to curb such brutality despite a change in political leadership last year.
