Canadian authorities on Monday suspended Harinder Sohi, a Peel Regional Police sergeant after he participated in a protest as part of a pro-Khalistan group that attacked Hindus at a temple in Brampton. Sohi was seen holding a Khalistani flag and chanting anti-India slogans. The police confirmed they were aware of the viral video showing Sohi, who was off duty at the time, taking part in the protest.
“This officer has since been suspended under the Community Safety and Policing Act," CBC quoted Media Relations Officer Richard Chin as saying.
He said further details on this would be shared after a comprehensive probe.
Notably, several pro-Khalistan supporters reportedly assaulted Hindu devotees at Brampton’s Hindu Sabha Temple on Sunday, igniting widespread outrage and condemnation. A widely circulated video on social media shows the assailants wielding sticks and attacking Hindu worshippers while raising slogans and carrying flags linked to the Khalistan movement.
Besides, anti-India elements orchestrated violent disruptions outside the Indian High Commission in Canada’s Brampton. Similar disturbances were observed at consular camps in Surrey and Vancouver.
The Peel Regional Police in Canada said three individuals were arrested after a demonstration by Hindu groups against the Khalistani groups.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lodged a strong protest against the attack on Hindu devotees. He also asked the Trudeau government to take action against such elements.
"I strongly condemn the deliberate attack on a Hindu temple in Canada. Equally appalling are the cowardly attempts to intimidate our diplomats. Such acts of violence will never weaken India’s resolve. We expect the Canadian government to ensure justice and uphold the rule of law," PM Modi posted on X.
