According to the Rio newspaper O Dia, the woman identified as Vieira was arrested shortly after entering the lender in Rio late on Tuesday with her late uncle and charged with violating a corpse and attempted theft fraud. Meanwhile, investigations are underway to determine how and when the man died.

According to Brazilian media reports, the woman claimed to be the man's 68-year-old niece and attempted to obtain a loan of 17,000 reais (approximately $3,250) in his name. “She tried to make it look like he was signing the papers,” local investigation chief Fabio Luiz told news website G1 “But he was already dead when he entered the bank,” he added.

The woman repeatedly asked his uncle to sign the loan. “Uncle, are you listening? You need to sign. If you don’t sign, there’s no way. I can’t sign for you, it has to be you. What I can do, I do,” the woman said, as quoted by CNN.

“Sign it so you don’t give me any more headaches, having to go to the registry office. I can’t take it anymore,” she added. The police are reportedly trying to establish a relationship between the woman and the dead man. However, the woman’s lawyer denied the allegations.
