A British-born Sikh woman in her 20s has been left “deeply affected” after an alleged racially motivated rape in the West Midlands, prompting police to arrest a man in his 30s. The assault occurred on Tuesday morning near Tame Road, Oldbury, between 8:00 am and 8:30 am. According to the Sikh Federation (UK), the perpetrators reportedly told the woman: “You don’t belong in this country, get out,” emphasising the racial nature of the crime.
West Midlands Police confirmed that a man was detained on Sunday evening on suspicion of rape and remains in custody as investigations continue. The arrest followed protests by the Sikh community demanding justice. Ch Supt Kim Madill described the arrest as a “significant development in the investigation” and thanked the community for their support, urging the public not to speculate while authorities identify all involved.
Victim’s Statement
The victim, who has exercised her right to anonymity, issued a statement through the Sikh Federation expressing gratitude for community support: “I would never wish this on anyone. All I was doing was going about my day on my way to work, and what has happened has deeply affected us. Through it all, my family has been my rock, and my community has stood strong beside me.”
The case has drawn condemnation from British lawmakers. MP Preet Kaur Gill described the incident as “extreme violence” and “racially aggravated,” stressing that the perpetrators’ comments were unacceptable. She stated, “She does belong here. Our Sikh community and every community has the right to feel safe, respected, and valued. Racism and misogyny have no place in Oldbury, or anywhere in Britain.”
Ch Supt Madill reiterated that investigations are ongoing, and legal proceedings are now active. Police confirmed the victim continues to receive support and appealed for any witnesses to come forward to assist in tracing all those involved.
