Amid growing anxiety among Indian professionals over H-1B visa renewals and possible delays under the Trump administration, a Reddit user’s detailed account of renewing the visa from Dubai has sparked cautious optimism. The Indian national, who holds a Dubai residency visa, shared their experience last week, suggesting that applying from a third country can be a viable option under existing US visa rules. 

The user clarified that Indian citizens are allowed to apply for an H-1B visa outside India, provided they hold a valid residency permit in the country where they apply. “Yes, you can apply [for an H-1B visa] in countries other than your home country as long as you hold a valid residency permit of that country,” the Redditor wrote. In Dubai, consular officials reportedly verified residency through the Emirates ID, though applicants noted that US consulates generally prefer home-country applications.

Process At Dubai Consulate

Describing the experience at the US consulate in Dubai as “simple and straightforward,” the applicant said the facility had minimal crowds and short wait times, possibly due to reduced staffing during the holiday season. The visit followed a three-step process involving document verification, biometrics and the visa interview.

At the first counter, officials checked the passport, Form I-797 approval notice, Emirates ID and photograph. Because the photo was outdated, the applicant was asked to retake it on-site at a cost of 80 dirhams, payable by exact cash or card. When the applicant briefly lacked payment, consular staff allowed them to exit and re-enter the facility.

A Moment Of Kindness Amid Formalities

The Reddit post also highlighted a human moment during the visit, recalling how a fellow applicant offered financial help when the user appeared stressed about the photo fee, a gesture the applicant described as reassuring. 

The visa interview itself was described as relaxed and professional. The consular officer asked standard questions about employment history, job role, salary, education, time spent in the US and family ties in Dubai. The officer also referred to a “Know Your Rights” brochure provided during biometrics and asked the applicant to explain their understanding of it.
