Sweden’s newly appointed health minister, Elisabet Lann, collapsed during a live press conference on Tuesday. The incident happened only hours after she officially took office. Lann was standing alongside Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Christian Democrats leader Ebba Busch when the collapse occurred. She had just finished speaking and was listening to another official. Moments later, she leaned forward, lost her balance, and fell over her lectern.

The dramatic scene was caught on camera. In the video, fellow officials can be seen laughing before panic set in. Security personnel rushed to her aid, and aides scrambled to check if she was alright.

Lann hit the floor hard but regained consciousness quickly. She later rejoined the press conference. “This was not exactly a normal Tuesday,” she joked. “This is what can happen when you have a blood sugar drop.” Government officials confirmed she fainted due to low blood sugar. Doctors cleared her after a quick medical check.

Viral Speculation Online

The video of her collapse quickly went viral online. While many expressed relief at her recovery, some internet users began speculating. Comments pointed to something that “starts with a V,” sparking conspiracy theories. Others dismissed the chatter as irresponsible, noting that fainting spells are not uncommon.

Who Is Elisabet Lann?

The incident added drama to Lann’s very first day as health minister. She had just replaced Acko Ankarberg Johansson, who resigned on Monday. Lann is no stranger to Sweden’s health system. She served as a municipal councillor in Gothenburg from 2019 and is a member of the Christian Democrats. She also sat on the inquiry that examined whether Sweden’s healthcare system should be fully nationalised.

Earlier in the day, before her collapse, she addressed the media on healthcare challenges. “Swedish healthcare is of high quality; the main issue is the long waiting times,” she said. “We must transition to equitable healthcare. It is clear that we must strengthen government control.”

Observers noted the irony that Sweden’s new health minister fainted on stage while talking about healthcare reforms. Still, officials stressed that her condition was not serious. By evening, Lann was back to work. Her office issued a statement confirming she was “feeling well” and thanked colleagues and security staff for their swift response.
