Chinese weight loss challenge: In an unconventional approach to employee wellness, Shenzhen-based tech company Arashi Vision Inc., widely known as Insta360, has made headlines for offering a one-million-yuan (Rs 1.16 crore) weight loss bonus to its staff. The initiative, called the “Million Yuan Weight Loss Challenge,” rewards employees for shedding excess weight, promoting healthier lifestyles, and encouraging regular exercise, according to a report by the South China Morning Post.
This year, Gen-Z employee Xie Yaqi emerged as the “Weight Loss Champion” after losing 20 kg in just three months, earning 20,000 yuan (Rs 2.33 lakh). As reported by the South China Morning Post, Xie maintained a strict routine of 1.5 hours of daily exercise and careful dietary management. “I believe this is the best time in my life to become the best version of myself. It’s not just about beauty – it’s about health,” Xie said. She even shared the “Qin Hao weight loss method,” a diet plan once used by Chinese actor Qin Hao to shed 10 kg in 15 days, with her colleagues to help those hitting a plateau.
How The Challenge Works
The challenge allows employees to register and earn 500 yuan (approximately Rs 5,850) for every 0.5 kg of weight lost. A penalty clause is also in place; participants who regain weight must pay a fine of 800 yuan (Rs 9,360) for each 0.5 kg gained. However, no one has been penalized so far, according to company sources. Since its launch in 2022, the company has conducted seven rounds of the challenge, awarding nearly 2 million yuan (Rs 2.33 crore) in total prizes. Last year, 99 employees participated, collectively losing 950kg and sharing 1 million yuan (Rs 1.16 crore) in cash rewards.

A company representative told the South China Morning Post, “Through this challenge, we aim to promote a healthy lifestyle and encourage our employees to prioritise their well-being beyond work. It serves as a positive incentive for them to engage with life and work with renewed enthusiasm.” The campaign aligns with China’s national “Weight Management Year” initiative (2024-2026), led by the National Health Commission, aiming to curb obesity and promote scientific fitness nationwide.

The challenge has captured wide public attention online, with netizens praising its innovative approach. One user commented, “What are the job requirements to get in? I’d work there and survive on just water if I had to!” Another joked, “I’d make the company go bankrupt. I’d run 10 km every day.”
