The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a Class II recall for over 10,000 cans of Coca-Cola due to concerns over possible contamination with a foreign object. The recall, which was initially implemented earlier this month, was formally classified by the FDA on Monday, underscoring the potential health risks associated with the affected products.

The recall specifically involves 864 12-packs of Coca-Cola distributed in two states by Reyes Coca-Cola Bottling, LLC, based in Milwaukee. While the FDA has not reported any injuries or illnesses linked to the affected products, the agency and Coca-Cola are taking precautionary measures to ensure consumer safety.

A Class II recall, as defined by the FDA, is "a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote." While the contamination is not deemed life-threatening, consumers are urged to check their purchases and dispose of any affected products immediately.

How To Identify Affected Products

Consumers concerned about whether they possess contaminated cans should check product labeling for specific identifying details. The affected 12-ounce Coca-Cola cans carry the UPC code 0 49000-00634 6, while the 12-pack carton has a separate UPC code: 0 49000-02890 4.

Additionally, the impacted cans display the date code “SEP2925MDA” and a time stamp ranging from “1100-1253”. The packaging also states, “Canned Under Authority of the Coca-Cola Company, Atlanta, GA 30313.”

What Consumers Should Do

Although most affected products have already been removed from store shelves, the FDA strongly advises anyone who has purchased cans matching the recall details to refrain from consuming them. Consumers should dispose of the product or return it to the retailer for a refund.

Coca-Cola has not yet disclosed specific details about how the contamination occurred or when the issue was initially discovered. However, the company has assured the public that it is taking all necessary steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.
