Business tycoon Elon Musk on Saturday urged the people to not donate money to Wikipedia, claiming that it is controlled by 'left-leaning' activists. In a post on X, which Musk owns, he slammed Wikipedia by sharing a post that claimed that Wikepedia removed some of the contents that alleged supported the left wing.
"Wikipedia is controlled by far-left activists. People should stop donating to them," Musk said. Earlier, US website "Pirates Wires" alleged "a coordinated campaign led by around 40 Wikipedia editors has worked to delegitimize Israel, present radical Islamist groups in a favourable light, and position fringe academic views on the Israel-Palestine conflict as mainstream over past years, intensifying after the October 7 attack."
The news website claimed that Wikipedia removed certain portions from the description of Hamas. "One of these editors successfully removed mention of Hamas’ 1988 charter, which calls for the killing of Jews and the destruction of Israel, from the article on Hamas," the report claimed.
The report also claimed that the group attempted to promote the interests of the Iranian government. "The group also appeared to attempt to promote the interests of the Iranian government across a number of articles, including deleting “huge amounts of documented human rights crimes by [Islamic Republic Party] officials”," the further claimed.
This is not the first time that Elon Musk has criticised Wikipedia. Earlier, he claimed that the organisation did not need the amount of money they were seeking from the people. He further offered Wikipedia a whopping amount of $1 billion if the organisation changed its name to "Dickipedia." Earlier, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, in an interview, said that he ignored Musk and did not take him seriously.
“I mean, he’s had a war of words with me, I just ignore him," he said in an interview with CNBC. He also claimed that Wikipedia is not selective in censorship. “What he refers to as censorship, we refer to as thoughtful editorial judgment, which is a very different matter. So, you know, Elon will be Elon,” Wales said.
