Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Cyprus took a surprising and heartfelt turn when Michaela Kythreoti Mhlapa, a member of the Council of Nicosia, greeted him by touching his feet, a traditional Indian gesture of deep respect. The moment, captured on video, has gone viral across social media platforms, drawing praise and reflection on India’s rising stature and soft cultural influence around the world.

The video shows PM Modi being welcomed in the historic Centre of Nicosia, the old walled part of Cyprus’s capital. Known for its Venetian-era fortifications, cobbled streets, and vibrant local culture, this symbolic location set the stage for an equally symbolic gesture. As Mhlapa bent to touch Modi’s feet, the Prime Minister, who is known for dissuading such gestures, especially from women, is seen folding his hands and offering blessings in return, embodying humility and grace.

The gesture quickly drew comparisons to a similar incident in May 2023, when Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister James Marape touched Modi’s feet during the Indian leader’s visit to Port Moresby. The act was widely regarded as a mark of respect for India and for Modi personally, signalling the growing admiration India commands on the world stage.

Political Reactions And Cultural Significance

Commenting on the Cyprus moment, BJP spokesperson CR Kesavan said, “First we saw Papua New Guinea PM James Marape touching PM Narendra Modi ji's feet... and now Michaela Kythreoti Mhlapa’s gesture shows the world’s admiration for India’s culture, ‘parampara’, and civilizational roots. PM Modi ji has unequivocally enhanced India’s prestige globally.”

Modi’s Cyprus visit also had formal recognition. Earlier on the same day, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides conferred the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III on him, Cyprus’s highest civilian honour. Modi accepted the award with gratitude, dedicating it to the 1.4 billion citizens of India and the enduring friendship between India and Cyprus. “Humbled to receive the 'Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III' of Cyprus. I dedicate it to the friendship between our nations,” he posted.
