A Florida city councilman was formally censured Thursday after a string of inflammatory social-media posts targeting Indians provoked outrage in his community and beyond. The Palm Bay City Council voted 3–2 to censure Councilman Chandler Langevin, restricting parts of his role and signalling official rebuke for comments that critics called racist and xenophobic.
Langevin, who represents a Palm Bay ward, had posted a series of messages on X attacking Indian residents and calling for drastic immigration action. One now-deleted post said, “There’s not a single Indian that cares about the United States.” On October 2, his birthday, he later noted, Langevin posted: “Today is my birthday and all I want is for @realDonaldTrump to revoke every Indian visa and deport them immediately. America for Americans.” He also urged President Donald Trump to rescind all Indian visas and accused Indian immigrants of “not assimilating” and “taking advantage of America.”
Community Response And Mayor’s Reprimand
Those remarks provoked swift condemnation from local residents and Indian American organisations, many of whom packed Palm Bay council chambers to demand accountability and Langevin’s resignation. Regional and national groups representing the Indian diaspora denounced the posts as hate speech and called on municipal and state authorities to act. Palm Bay Mayor William Medina issued a public rebuke, telling residents that “words that demean or devalue others have no place in the Palm Bay we aspire to be.”

Details Of Censure
The council’s censure is largely symbolic but carries practical limits: Langevin may still place items on council agendas but only with prior consensus, and he is barred from speaking during the meeting segment reserved for committee and council reports except to request such consensus. The council did not remove him from office, and Langevin has vowed to fight the reprimand legally.

America for Americans 🇺🇸
In a post on X and in a phone interview with The Washington Post, Langevin said he has filed a lawsuit against the city and framed his remarks as an attempt to provoke “discourse” on immigration, drawing a parallel to other politicians who have posted provocative statements. Langevin deleted at least one of the contentious posts but has publicly refused to apologise, defending his comments as part of political debate.
He told reporters he was “not the first Republican to make a mean tweet,” and accused critics of overreacting. The Florida Commission on Ethics, he said, had not accepted a complaint against him, and he suggested the state governor would not move to remove him.
