United States Vice President JD Vance on Monday downplayed online speculation regarding a viral moment at the Switzerland peace talks, dismissing reports that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had deliberately snubbed the American delegation. In the video, Vance was seen standing just a few meters away when the Iranian delegation briefly walked out of the high-stakes talks.

Responding to claims that Araghchi ignored US officials and walked out of the negotiations, Vance clarified that the internet rumours do not reflect what actually transpired during the high-stakes meetings in Burgenstock. Speaking to reporters before he boarded Air Force Two, Vance said, “I mean, trust me, I’ve spent a lot of time dealing with the Iranians over the last few months.” He added, “Sometimes I find them extremely confusing as negotiators.”

US and Iran delegations negotiated for nine hours

Vance said that he found the initial social media firestorm amusing, noting that online rumours quickly claimed the Iranians were going to leave the talks. However, he clarified that both sides proceeded to negotiate for the next nine hours, proving the online speculation wrong. “What I did find kind of funny is that after that initial meeting, there was this, you know, sort of social media firestorm where everybody said the Iranians are going to leave.”

He added, “And then we proceeded to talk to them for like the next nine hours. So I would just encourage the media mistrust a little bit what you see coming out of Iranian social media.” Vance further described the talks with Iran as a "a very productive 36 hours,” expressing optimism over progress made on maritime security, regional stability and nuclear oversight. According to him, one of the key outcomes of the talks was an agreement on measures to keep the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global shipping route open and secure.

"The fundamental things that we got are number one, we set up the mechanism to ensure not only the Straits of Hormuz are open but will stay open. We think about 15 million barrels of oil come out; that's one of the reasons why oil is so low right now, which also means lower gas prices and gas prices will keep coming down," Vance said.
