Donald Trump will today assume office as the 47th President of the United States. Foreign Minister S Jaishankar will represent the Government of India at the inauguration ceremony. Immediately after taking office, Trump is expected to sign over 100 executive orders, which his team has prepared for the start of his second term. The main goal of these executive orders is to fulfill campaign promises.
The orders will focus on five key issues, which include–Sealing the southern border, mass deportation, banning transgender people from women’s sports, lifting restrictions on energy exploration and improving government efficiency.
It is expected that some of Trump’s supporters, arrested for their roles in the January 6 Capitol Hill attack four years ago, will be pardoned.
Biden’s Orders Likely To Be Overturned By Trump
Trump is also expected to overturn some of Joe Biden’s executive orders and actions. These include rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement and lifting the ban on fossil fuel production. On his first day, Biden issued nine executive orders, six of which reversed Trump’s decisions.
Trump Returns With More Experience
Donald Trump will take the oath of office for a second time. This time, he has more experience than during his previous term and his team is also stronger. Several tech giants, including Elon Musk, have been given key positions in his team.
His Republican party holds a strong position in both houses of Congress. This is why Trump is ready to make aggressive decisions from day one onwards. In 2017, Trump had claimed that he had no political experience, but the scenario has now changed.
In an interview with NBC News, Trump mentioned that he plans to sign a record number of executive orders on his first day. Executive orders are unilateral directives issued by the President that carry the force of law. Unlike laws, executive orders do not require approval from Congress and cannot be overturned. However, such orders can be challenged in court.

Before Trump’s inauguration, thousands gathered in Washington DC to protest against his policies. Under the banner of People’s March, a coalition of non-profit organisations organised protests against Trump’s policies. Protesters held anti-Trump posters and banners, chanting slogans against him and some of his close allies, including Elon Musk. This same group had also protested in January 2017 when Trump first took office.
