US President Donald Trump has once again asserted that he personally prevented a nuclear confrontation between India and Pakistan by threatening both nations with severe economic retaliation. His comments come months after India’s Operation Sindoor, a major cross-border counter-terror operation launched in May 2025 following the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives.

Speaking at a public event, Trump recounted what he described as a moment of extreme regional hostility. According to him, New Delhi and Islamabad were on the brink of deploying nuclear weapons.

“India and Pakistan were going to go at it with nuclear weapons. I told them you can go at it, but I'm putting a 350 per cent tariff on each country,” he said. “No more trade with the United States.” He claimed both sides pushed back. “They said, we don’t like that. I said, I don’t care if you like it or not,” he added.

Criticism Of Biden And Praise From Regional Leaders

Trump used the moment to criticise former president Joe Biden, saying, “Another guy like Joe Biden wouldn’t even know what countries we’re talking about.”

He further claimed economic pressure had resolved “five of the eight” global conflicts he handled. Trump said then-Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif thanked him, allegedly saying he “saved millions of lives.” :“But no, I use tariffs to settle all these, not all of them. Five of the eight were settled because of the economy, because of trade, because of tariffs. I’ll tell you what the Prime Minister of Pakistan (Shehbaz Sharif) called me," Trump said, further quoting him, “Thank you very much." He also claimed Prime Minister Narendra Modi called to affirm that India would not go to war.

“And I got a call from Prime Minister Modi saying, we’re done. I said, you’re done with what? ‘We’re not going to go to war’. I said, Thank you very much. Let’s make a deal," Trump claimed.

“But I saved a lot of people, millions of people, on many other wars," he added.

Ceasefire and Washington’s Claimed Role

The four-day standoff between India and Pakistan ended after direct communication between both governments. Soon after, Trump posted on social media that India and Pakistan had agreed to a “full and immediate ceasefire” following a “long night” of Washington-mediated negotiations.
