Tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan escalated sharply this week as the Afghan Taliban released drone footage showing strikes on Pakistani border outposts, following deadly clashes near Spin Boldak and Chaman. Both countries have accused each other of initiating the overnight violence, which has left dozens of soldiers and civilians dead.
Among the casualties are four Pakistani security personnel, with four others injured, while the Taliban claimed that Pakistani strikes killed 12 civilians and injured more than 100 people. The clashes reportedly began at around 4 am local time and continued for several hours. Drone footage circulated online shows Taliban forces targeting Pakistani military positions along the Durand Line, the contested border between the two nations.
Taliban Offensive And Pakistani Response
The recent confrontations follow a series of escalating incidents. The Taliban launched an offensive along parts of Afghanistan’s southern border last weekend, reportedly killing 58 Pakistani soldiers, destroying military outposts, and seizing weapons and tanks. In retaliation, Pakistan vowed a strong response, claiming that its forces killed 15–20 Taliban fighters, destroyed Taliban posts and a training facility, and repulsed the attacks effectively.

Disputed Border And Militancy Concerns
The latest escalation comes amid longstanding disputes over Pakistan’s alleged support for militant groups such as the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which Islamabad claims are harboured on Afghan soil, a charge Kabul denies. Tensions further intensified after the Taliban blamed Pakistan for airstrikes in Kabul last week, including an attack in a crowded market in eastern Afghanistan.
Videos emerging online show what are claimed to be captured Pakistani soldiers, some pleading for their lives. These visuals underscore the human toll of the ongoing conflict and have drawn international attention to the volatile situation along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.
Local Confirmation Of Casualties
Local officials confirmed the casualties and injuries. Ali Mohammad Haqmal, a Taliban spokesman, told AFP that the clashes caused significant losses to Pakistani forces, while Abdul Jan Barak, a hospital official in Spin Boldak, verified that dozens were treated for injuries.
The clashes reflect the fragile security situation in the region and the unresolved territorial tensions along the Durand Line. Both sides continue to trade blame, with the Taliban rejecting the legitimacy of the border, while Pakistan emphasises defending its sovereignty and targeting militant hideouts along its frontier.
