Earthquake In Japan:  A massive earthquake of magnitude 7.6 on the Richter scale jolted Japan on the first day of New Year 2024 on Monday. A Tsunami warning has also been triggered, reported Sky News. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning along the coastal regions of Ishikawa, Niigata and Toyama regions.

According to a Reuters report quoting Japanese channel NHK, the Hokuriku Electric Power is checking for any irregularities at its nuclear power plants. Tsunami waves, reaching heights of up to 120 centimetres, have reached the coast of Wajima city in the Ishikawa state of Japan, as per NHK reports. Whereas, a 40-centimeter tsunami hit Kashizawaki City in Niigata Prefecture. Japan has also issued another earthquake warning for Ishikawa Prefecture.

NHK TV, the Japanese public broadcaster, reported about tsunami waves potentially reaching a height of 5 meters (16.5 feet). The authorities in Japan have advised people to move to higher ground or the top of nearby buildings. No immediate reports on damages are available.

Another Japanese agency managing nuclear power plants in the region has said that the reactors are working fine, and 'no abnormality at nuclear plants' in the area. Another 5.7 magnitude earthquake has also hit the region near the west coast of Honshu, Japan.

Meanwhile, videos of the incident have erupted over the microblogging website 'X'.

One user posted the strong waves in the sea, triggered by the earthquake.

Japan is highly susceptible to earthquakes. In March 2011, a major earthquake and subsequent tsunami resulted in a nuclear plant meltdown.
