Earthquake With 7.4 Magnitude Jolts Mexico, Videos Show Buildings Shaking; Tsunami Warning Issued For Guatemala

Mexico Earthquake: A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck near Puerto Madero in Mexico on Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake occurred at a depth of around 10 kilometres (6.21 miles). Following the quake, the US Tsunami Warning System issued an alert, warning that hazardous tsunami waves could be possible within 300 kilometres of the epicentre along the coasts of Mexico and Guatemala.

Videos Emerge

Videos circulating after the powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake show people rushing out of their homes as strong tremors hit Mexico. The visuals also capture buildings shaking during the quake, highlighting the intensity of the earthquake. The earthquake was also felt in Guatemala City, where buildings shook and some residents rushed out of their homes onto the streets, according to a Reuters witness. Local media showed footage of staff members evacuating a government building after security protocols were activated.

The tremors were also felt in El Salvador, another Reuters witnes reported. In a post on X, Oaxaca (southwestern Mexico state) Governor Salomon Jara Cruz  media that the earthquake was felt with moderate intensity in the state capital. However, no major damage was reported immediately.

No Damage In Oaxaca

He wrote on X, "A preliminary magnitude 6.8 earthquake has been recorded with its epicenter in Chiapas; it was felt in Oaxaca. The seismic event was felt with moderate intensity. Immediately, Civil Protection agencies activated review and monitoring protocols in the various regions to verify possible impacts and safeguard the population."

"To date, no significant damage has been reported. Citizens are urged to remain calm, follow the authorities' recommendations, and stay informed solely through official channels," Cruz added.
