Elon Musk’s social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) will close its San Francisco office which marks the ending of the company's presence in the city where it was founded in 2006. The decision comes as part of a broader shift in the company’s operations, with employees set to be relocated to existing offices in San Jose and Palo Alto, as reported by Bloomberg.

According to the report, X CEO Linda Yaccarino informed in an internal email that the company was closing its Market Street headquarters, which has been a crucial location for the business since it moved there.

The move comes after Elon Musk bought the company in 2022 and said that the company was unhappy with the political and cultural environment in San Francisco as well as the state laws in California under Governor Gavin Newsom. The Tesla chief had earlier said that X would relocate its headquarters to Texas. The company had earlier put 460,000 square feet of its San Francisco office space up for lease.

The closure of X's San Francisco office marks the end of an era as the social media firm, earlier known as Twitter, was founded here. According to research, San Francisco currently has the highest office vacancy rate- above 36 per cent- among major US metro regions.
