A short video clip allegedly showing French President Emmanuel Macron being slapped by his wife Brigitte has gone viral on social media, fueling both speculation and controversy. The footage, captured as the presidential couple disembarked from an aircraft, appears to show a tense moment that quickly became the internet’s latest sensation.

In the video, President Macron is seen standing at the door of the aircraft with Brigitte Macron positioned just ahead of him. The atmosphere appears strained, with both exchanging few gestures. As the aircraft door opens, Brigitte turns slightly and reaches toward Macron’s face in what many viewers interpreted as a slap to the mouth.

The President appeared briefly surprised, then immediately turns to the cameras, forces a smile, and waves, attempting to downplay the awkward exchange. Moments later, the couple walked down the stairs hand in hand, although Brigitte holds onto the railing for support, further fueling speculation about an ongoing quarrel.

Internet Reactions and Speculation

The video quickly went viral, particularly on X, where many users expressed shock. One user highlighted the double standards in domestic abuse cases, writing, “Imagine for one moment if Macron pushed his wife in the face like this? Domestic abuse against men is common and widely ignored. All violence is unacceptable.”

Another added, “He looked clearly angry and upset as he got off and couldn’t hide his emotions.”

The video prompted a heated discussion online about whether the action was an act of aggression or simply a misinterpreted moment between a long-married couple.

Macron Downplays Incident

President Macron has downplayed the incident, clarifying the nature of their interaction. Speaking to reporters in Hanoi, Macron said, "I was bickering, or rather joking, with my wife. It's nothing."

In response to the growing buzz, a presidential aide also described the interaction as nothing more than a marital “spat.” The official emphasised that there was no hostility involved, calling it a "moment of connection" that had been blown out of proportion.

Another source close to the Elysee Palace told BFMTV, a French news broadcaster, it was merely “playful banter” between the couple, adding that the pair were letting off steam before the start of their official engagements. The same source pointed fingers at pro-Russian accounts for spreading and amplifying the footage to provoke public outrage.
