Traditional relationships are transforming from rituals of self-marriage to robotic companions. These unconventional marriages are a reflection of the growing acceptance of different expressions of commitment and love. A new addition has joined this continuing series: a Japanese man who married the fictional Vocaloid Hatsune Miku in 2018 is still happily married and anticipating their sixth wedding anniversary.

According to the South China Morning Post, on October 23, 41-year-old Akihiko Kondo posted on Instagram the receipt for a cake he purchased for their anniversary on November 4.
The cake bears the message, "I like Miku very much. Happy six-year anniversary."
Kondo told the Japanese news outlet The Mainichi Shimbun that he had romantic feelings for women before high school.

He made seven unsuccessful attempts to proclaim his love, and because he was an otaku—someone who is infatuated with manga and anime—he was ridiculed and harassed. Shortly after Miku's 2007 debut, Kondo fell deeply in love with the character.
He was bullied at work, and as a result, he was diagnosed with adjustment disorder and underwent extended sick leave, according to the news outlet.
The character, whose name is translated as "the first sound of the future" in English, is officially known as a Vocaloid, a type of singing voice synthesiser software. Those who are fond of her recognise her as a 16-year-old pop singer with long, turquoise twintails.
