At least five Palestinians were killed in an Israeli strike on the Nur Shams refugee camp in the West Bank on Monday, the Palestinian health ministry said in a statement. According to the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, there were four loud explosions in Tulkarm, West Bank, after an Israeli drone struck a house in the camp. Israel has not yet responded to these reports.
Since the beginning of the Gaza war last year, clashes in the West Bank have surged, with Israeli forces intensifying operations against militant groups such as Hamas and the Iranian-backed Islamic Jihad.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported a grim escalation in violence in the West Bank in August, with Israeli airstrikes resulting in an average of one Palestinian death per day. This comes amid the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict that began on October 7, 2023. Since the onset of this conflict, at least 128 Palestinians, including 26 children, have lost their lives due to airstrikes in the West Bank, highlighting the severe humanitarian impact of the ongoing violence.
According to Israeli officials, at least 19 Israelis have lost their lives in attacks by Palestinians during the same timeframe. The Nur Shams camp near Tulkarm has faced several assaults by the Israeli army. Notably, in April, a two-day Israeli raid resulted in the deaths of 14 people, as reported by the Palestinian Red Crescent. Additionally, in July, Israeli forces conducted a 15-hour raid on Nur Shams, during which they bulldozed the main street.
Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has said that it targeted a command room belonging to local terror operatives.
The Palestinian militant group Hamas on October 7 launched unprecedented ground, air, and sea attacks on Israel. In retaliation, the Israel Defense Forces launched multiple attacks and a withering barrage of strikes on Gaza that resulted in several casualties.
