Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) arrived at the White House on Tuesday to an extravagant welcome, marking his first official visit in over seven years. US President Donald Trump hosted the ceremony with full pomp, featuring a military honour guard, a cannon salute, and a dramatic fighter-jet flyover. The South Lawn was decorated with green Saudi flags alongside the American stars and stripes, symbolising a major reset in US–Saudi ties as Washington’s relationship with India faces new strains.

Khashoggi Question Sparks Tense Exchange

The celebrations briefly gave way to controversy when an ABC reporter asked why Americans should trust MBS, given US intelligence findings that he approved the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018. Trump dismissed the question, attacking ABC News as “fake news” and defending the crown prince.

“You’re mentioning somebody extremely controversial,” Trump said. “Whether you liked him or didn’t like him, things happen. But he [bin Salman] knew nothing about it… You don’t have to embarrass our guest.”

US intelligence concluded in 2021 that MBS approved the operation, though he has denied ordering the murder while accepting responsibility as the nation’s de facto ruler.

Saudi Investment Promises Soar To $1 Trillion

Trump further claimed that Saudi Arabia had agreed to invest USD 600 billion in the United States. In response, MBS raised the figure, stating that Saudi Arabia “believes in the future of America” and intends to increase its investment pledge to nearly USD 1 trillion.
