Italy Prime Minister Georgia Meloni clarified her continued friendship with billionaire Elon Musk, emphasising that it remained a personal relationship separate from her responsibilities as head of government. Speaking before the European Union summit in Brussels, she assured lawmakers that his economic interests would not sway her ties with Musk.
During a parliamentary discussion, the prime minister stated that her friendship with Elon Musk does not conflict with her role, highlighting that her government enacted Italy's first law regulating private space activity to attract foreign investment.
“I can be a friend of Elon Musk and at the same time the head of the first Italian government that made a new law to regulate private activity in space,” she said.
She emphasised having good relationships with many but taking orders from no one. “I have good relationships with many people but I don't take orders from anyone,” she added.

Musk’s Involvement In Meloni's Italy
Meloni and Musk's relationship gained media attention after a viral photo of them looking fondly at each other in September. Musk later denied rumours of a romantic relationship. The photo was taken at a black-tie event in New York, where Musk presented Meloni with an award.

Meloni held frequent meetings with Elon Musk to attract investment, leading her far-right coalition to approve a framework allowing foreign space companies like Musk's to operate in Italy. This initiative is expected to generate USD 7.3 billion in investments by 2026. A widely circulated photo of Meloni and Musk in September sparked speculation on social media about their relationship.
Musk has commented on political issues in Italy, including a dispute over Meloni’s plans to vet migrants rescued at sea. His remarks on the matter were criticized by Italy’s president.
