The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has issued a strong warning to legal immigrants, emphasising that green cards and visas are conditional privileges, not guaranteed rights. In a recent post on X, the agency made it clear that any legal immigrant violating American laws or values could face immediate revocation of their immigration status.

The crackdown comes amid a broader immigration shift led by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who announced a new "one-strike" policy titled "Catch-And-Revoke." Under this approach, non-citizens, whether green card holders, visa recipients, or international students- face immediate status cancellation if they are found breaking US laws.

Rubio’s statement reads, “There is now a one-strike policy: Catch-And-Revoke. Whenever the government catches non-US citizens breaking our laws, we will take action to revoke their status. The time of contemptuously taking advantage of our nation’s generosity ends.”

Terrorism Supporters In Crosshairs Of New Policy

The policy announcement follows public criticism of the Biden administration’s response to global terrorism, particularly after Hamas' October 7, 2023, attack on Israel. Rubio condemned what he described as a failure to act against terrorist sympathisers residing in the US, especially on college campuses. “The Biden Administration did very little to protect our Jewish citizens and the American people at large from foreign terrorist sympathisers in their midst,” Rubio stated.

He alleged that certain foreign nationals were involved in violent protests and actions that led to the exclusion and harassment of Jewish students. “They allowed campus buildings to be overrun by violent thugs,” Rubio added, emphasising that such behaviour would no longer be tolerated.

Due Process For Immigrants At Risk

Under previous immigration norms, non-citizens had some legal recourse to challenge revocation decisions or fix minor violations. However, under the new framework, a revoked visa may be sufficient grounds for deportation, without the chance for appeal or due process.

“Coming to America and receiving a visa or green card is a privilege,” USCIS wrote. “Our laws and values must be respected. If you advocate for violence, endorse or support terrorist activity, or encourage others to do so, you are no longer eligible to stay in the US”
