He Gets 250,000, You 25…': Canada's Mark Carney Praises PM Modi, Playfully Teases His Minister After India Visit | Watch

Canadian PM Mark Carney on Wednesday heaped praises on PM Narendra Modi, calling him a "unique guy", while also joking about his weekend routine.

Days after he visited New Delhi, Carney was in Australia's Sydney and was at a seminar hosted by the Lowy Institute. During the interaction, he was asked about his assessment of PM Modi. To this, he stated, "The guy is unique. He has not taken a day off in 25 years, either as the Chief Minister of Gujarat or as the Prime Minister."

In a light-hearted moment, he also mentioned PM Modi's, often-lauded, consistency of work, joking with his minister François-Philippe Champagne.

Addressing Champagne, he said, "He hasn't taken even one day off. Every weekend, like you, he is out campaigning. He gets 250,000 people at his rallies, you get 25, but that's okay".

His remarks drew laughter from the audience present at the event. In his remarks, Carney also praised PM Modi for his work ethic and the success of the United Payments Interface (UPI), calling it an important achievement of the Indian PM.

"He gave me a hack that anyone would follow up on, which is he's a person who is very focused on delivery... I'll call it to the rural household.. So a huge motivation for the financial reform transformations, the payment systems transformation, UPI and other things was to get money directly, as you know, directly to individuals without leakage, shall we say, in the system in real-time. And to bring people... you know, hundreds of millions of people into the formal economy. And he's very focused on that aspect of delivery," Carney said.

Carney visited India for four days between February 27 and March 2, 2026. The visit was significant in normalising relations between the two countries, following the low point in 2023, when Carney's predecessor, Justin Trudeau, alleged India's role behind the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada's British Columbia.

The visit proved significant as the countries signed key agreements on critical minerals and uranium ore supply.
