A heartbreaking story from China has gripped social media after a 130-kilogram man died following a gastric bypass surgery he underwent in hopes of impressing his girlfriend’s parents. The man, identified by the pseudonym Li Jiang, was from Xinxiang in Henan province and had long struggled with obesity and eating-related issues.
According to South China Morning Post, Li, who stood 174 centimetres tall, was preparing to meet his girlfriend’s parents for the first time. His older brother told local media that Li was eager to make a strong impression and viewed the meeting as a step toward marriage.
“Things were going well, so he wanted to slim down before meeting the parents. He did it because he was preparing for marriage,” his brother said.
Li was admitted to the Ninth People’s Hospital in Zhengzhou on September 30, and the gastric bypass surgery took place two days later, on October 2. Initially, the operation appeared to be successful, and he was transferred from the intensive care unit (ICU) to a general ward for recovery.

Sudden Deterioration And Tragic Outcome
Li’s condition took a tragic turn on October 4 when he was found unresponsive around 6:40 am. He was rushed back to the ICU, but despite emergency treatment, he succumbed to respiratory failure the next day.
Medical records revealed that Li had been gaining weight rapidly over the past year and suffered from multiple obesity-related health issues, including hypertension, fatty liver, metabolic syndrome, and sleep-related breathing problems. These conditions made his surgery riskier than usual.
Family Raises Questions Over Medical Evaluation
Li’s family has since questioned whether the hospital properly assessed his health before approving the surgery. They also expressed concerns about whether doctors responded quickly enough when his condition worsened.
In response, the hospital told Jimu News that Li met all clinical criteria for gastric bypass surgery and that the medical team “acted immediately” when complications arose.
Health Commission To Investigate
Both the family and the hospital have requested the local Health Commission to conduct an autopsy to determine the precise cause of death. The hospital said the autopsy results would serve as the “most authoritative basis” for identifying the medical cause and promised to accept full responsibility based on the commission’s findings.
